About the Workshop

"Antigone in Sankarya: The Law of Citizens" is a workshop inviting citizens to engage with public space as a stage for political dialogue. Drawing from Sophocles' Antigone, it focuses on the Chorus as a community of citizens (the Demos). Tragedy becomes a public forum addressing contemporary dilemmas of democracy, disobedience, civic responsibility, power, gender, and justice.

Led by Christina Zoniou and Nikos Govas, this workshop presents ongoing research on using Theatre of the Oppressed and participatory theatre methods with classical plays to foster democratic reflection and citizen engagement. Previously implemented in Greece, India, and Turkey (Ankara) it's now offered as an open inquiry in Sankarya.

Using techniques from Forum Theatre, Image Theatre, Legislative Theatre, documentary theatre, and creative drama, participants collectively devise contemporary theatrical responses to ancient questions: What is justice? What are authority's limits? What does citizenship mean today?. Antigone serves as a social metaphor bridging antiquity and present, with these questions as dramaturgical material for developing contemporary participatory social theatre.
